Fossil Ridge kept their unbeaten streak alive, defeating the rival Poudre High School Impalas 4-1 on the road open conference play.

The Sabercats gained plenty of chances early on, but were unable to convert them into any goals. Even with several scoring opportunities, Fossil was not playing with a sense of urgency.

“We weren’t trying, we weren’t hustling,” said senior attacker Kylie Ballek. “Second half we really had to step it up.”

After fixing up some things at halftime, Fossil Ridge came out swinging. Fossil striker Amy Smith broke the tie less than ten minutes into the second half after some great passing.

But Poudre bounced back with a quick goal of their own as they were able to find the seam in the Sabercat defenses.

However Fossil came alive late during the last twenty minutes to secure the win. The Sabercats secured three goals, with another coming from Smith and two from Kylie Ballek.

“Our whole team had a talk at halftime…like a little motivation,” Ballek said. “[We were] screaming at each other to get us going.”

Ballek has dominated the early part of the season, with seven goals in six games. The senior’s versatile skills have earned her plenty of opportunities, including taking the majority of Fossil’s free and corner kicks. Her first and the eventual game winner came off a free kick from over twenty yards away.

“I obviously want to take those kicks,” Ballek said. “Even if they don’t always work out I’ll still keep going and keep trying.”

The Sabercats continue their red hot start to the season, as they reach 6-0 and 1-0 in Front Range League play. They have outscored their opponents 20-5 through the start of the season in a complete show of dominance.

The team will look to keep this winning streak rolling as they return home in another league showdown against Erie High School on Tuesday, April 11.
