The 2024-2025 basketball season for Fossil Ridge and other local high schools have changed their game-scheduling to have double headers, which consists of every team, boys and girls, to play at one location on gameday.
In an interview, Fossil’s Athletic Director Dave Walck gave some insight about the recent scheduling change.
“So we were in a different league. Last year we ran a 16 team conference called the Front Range league,” and “ They did girls, home, boys, way, and that’s what the Front Front Range League has done for years. So this year, we moved into what’s called the Northern League, which is a combined in basketball, 6 A, 5 A, 4 A, there’s multiple classifications in that league.”
Another reason that was touched on is the girls teams attendance.
“Attendance at girls basketball games was not great. At boys games, obviously, was better”
Walck also stated that other schools in our league rely mostly on their gate revenue, so putting all of the teams in one place capitalizes the gate revenue the most when fans watch girls and boys games at home.
To get more of Walck’s opinion on the girls’ attendance growth, “A big thing that has been noticed is the attendance at the girls game has increased.”
“Yep, kids are coming, which is good. I think that’s a positive. And to me, it might be worth it, just for that,” Walck adds.
When asking if the new format will stay or change again in the near future, Walck says that it will for at least another year. One of the only downsides is that for staff roles like the AD or similar jobs that home game days end up being 13 hour days at the school and can start early and end late.
For the most part, positive impacts have come from changing up the scheduling process, which is always the goal for change.
