MU Alpha Theta Math Honor Society (MAΘ) offers tutoring for students wanting to improve their skills, finish their homework, or study for their next test.
Math tutoring is offered on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 8:05 to 8:55 a.m. in the media center.
MAΘ is a student run club that requires members to serve at least six hours of community service. Math tutoring is a great way for members to get in their hours.
“You could only sign up for two tutoring sessions a semester, and you just sit in the library in the mornings and you wait for people to come for your help,” freshman Gia Grothman said.
Requirements for MAΘ include that the student has to be past College Algebra, they have to have a 3.6 math GPA, and that they’re Calculus bound while at Fossil.
From algebra to calculus, MAΘ is available to any student in any math level.
“We are able to help most students and give them the guidance they need,” Grothman said, “but a lot of people don’t go to it”
Although math tutoring is a great opportunity for students, most choose not to get help from their peers.
“A lot of times tutors are just sitting in there by themselves, they’re providing a free service, but I just think other students just are apprehensive about going in there and getting help,” Math teacher and MAΘ officer Todd Pfeifer said.
The students and leaders of MAΘ hope more students will choose to come to tutoring when they are in need of mathematic help.
“I just wish that it was more like talked about so people could actually come and use the resources that we have for them,” Grothman said.
In the future, MAΘ hopes to create a YouTube channel to make videos on different math skills.
“You won’t have to physically go into tutoring,” Pfeifer said, “if you’re at home or wherever, you can just pull up videos and get help that way.”
