After years of offering free summer school courses, Poudre School district has changed the requirements and structure of summer school.
The cost of summer school courses has changed as of the 25-26 school year so that classes are $100 for students seeking first time credit or grade replacement classes. On the other hand, classes will remain free for students requiring credit recovery, students who are behind on graduation requirements, or those who qualify under specific eligibility guidelines.
Matt Murphy, a counselor at Fossil Ridge for 19 years, talks about the changes in summer school and the possible impact on students.
“ I see some value in paying something because you’re more invested,” Murphy said. “I mean, for a lot of our students here, that’s not really for not a big deal, because they have the resources. I think I’m more concerned about students who don’t have the ability to drop $100 and want to take summer school.”
According to Bianca Katz, who works on summer curriculum for PSD, the April/May session has been removed, and a new July session has been added. One of the reasons for this change is because the April/May session focused on graduating seniors but they can now find the same resources at their home school. The July session was added to broaden the district’s summer opportunities.
There is also a platform upgrade. Edmentum Apex platform is being replaced with Edmentum courseware.
When asked about her thoughts of the summer school changes, sophomore Tori Wanner said, “I don’t think it would affect me if I took courses. I think I’d pay for that, but I think it’s kind of stupid, because you don’t have to pay for regular school.”
With the ongoing changes in budget and the summer school structure it will continue to change and impact the students seeking extra credits.
