After a hiatus of almost four years, the well-loved pop punk band Fall Out Boy released its fifth album, Save Rock and Roll on April 13, 2013. Save Rock and Roll still has me in awe from the mixture of catchy lyrics, the upmost talented artists featured on the album, and the new re-invented sound. From this new album, Fall Out Boy has decided to release a music video for each song, in a series called The Young Blood Chronicles..
The Young Blood Chronicles started in February 2012 with the No.1 single, “My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up).” The song made me bounce my leg and bob my head with the “in your face” drum beat and the intricate guitar chords in-between lines of lyrics. The video takes place at night and mega star rapper 2chainz appears with two girls and they start a fire, with Fall Out Boy’s instruments being thrown into it.
In March 2012, the music video for “The Phoenix” was released and the band was shown being captured by the unknown girls. “The Phoenix” is my favorite single off the album because I find myself singing along easily to the strong lyrics and tapping my foot to the rad drum beat. “The Phoenix” shows the band finding a briefcase with something concealed inside away from the viewers. This briefcase is what causes the many problems for Fall Out Boy in later videos.
With the videos, the story shows the band constantly getting beat up. They seem to be running away from Patrick Stump, who turns evil from a magical boom box, or from the evil girls who no one knows the name of. These videos differ from previous Fall Out Boy videos because they’re more of a darker theme rather than the happy, full of life videos like “Sugar, We’re Going Down.” This new concept keeps me and everybody else on their toes when watching the series.
After “The Phoenix” released, the next videos released were “Young Volcanoes,” “Alone Together,” “The Mighty Fall,” and ”Just One Yesterday.” These videos were perfectly executed and followed a great story. With the combination of great featured artists like Big Sean and Foxes, it brings the videos to life because they end up deciding the fate of the band, whether it’s good or bad.
With the most recent video for “Where Did The Party Go,” released in December 2013, Joe Trohman gets strangled by Stump. Since the song is very upbeat, it makes the video fun and takes away the fact that Trohman doesn’t have a happy ending. It takes place in a hospital and it shows scenes of Stump seeing dead people all around the hospital while the rest of the band is trying to hide from him.
“Death Valley,” the most recent video, was also released in December 2013 and it shows Trohman arriving in hell with Tommy Lee. Trohman gets treated like a king by the servants and ends up rocking it out on the guitar with Lee. Then, Hurley and Wentz find out that the suspected leader of the people after them is artist Courtney Love.
Courtney Love is featured on my favorite song “Rat A Tat” and is expected to be in the next music video. So, will Fall Out Boy finally come out as victors, or will the series end like no fan will expect?
