The Fossil Ridge girls’ basketball team has won their first three games in the Colorado 5A playoffs, paving their path to the Final Four. They played Denver East, Rangeview, and Dakota Ridge, winning by a combined 74 points. “We came in to the games amped up and ready to play,” FRHS junior Kellee Willer said.
Willer said the team did well at practice leading up to the games and they “worked great as a team.” Their defense and tenacity also helped contribute to their success FRHS senior Savannah Smith said.
Despite the good overall performance during the two games, there are things the team needs to work on. “We need to have fewer turnovers,” Smith said. Willer also stated, “We need to make our lay-ups, play more physically, and go into the game with confidence.”
Although they have won three games in a row, Smith still believes that, “the team hasn’t reached our full potential because we haven’t played a complete game, start to finish.” With that in mind, if the girls can play a full game without making any mental lapses Smith believes, “we are a potent and dangerous team that can create a lot of noise in the playoffs.” They believe that with this mentality they can reach their goal of making it to the championship and achieving the first 5A championship in the FRHS girls’ basketball history.
FRHS’ next game is against the second ranked team in the state, Grandview, at the Denver Coliseum on March 13, while city rival, Poudre, plays the number one team in the state, Regis Jesuit in the Final Four.
