Fossil Ridge High School and Greeley West went head to head last night in an even conference match up. The game was a constant back and forth battle between each team with Fossil ending up on top 68-58.

Greeley West came into the game with a 13-2 record, looking very impressive throughout the season thus far. Fossil stood at 10-5 before the win.

The Spartans had a steady, but small lead throughout most of the first half of the game. At half time, they were leading by just three.

“They outplayed us in the first half at our style of basketball. We came out with a new found enthusiasm and energy in the second half which led to some easy baskets and really got us going.” said Jamie Menefee, an assistant coach. “We outplayed them using our style to seal the game.”

Braxton Bertolette, the leading 5A scorer, came out hot hitting two three pointers within the first minute of the game. He finished the night with 26 points against the Spartans. Garrett Schmidt also showed his presence last night with 19 points.

“We had a solid game,” Braxton Bertolette said. “We played hard defense in the second half and shots started to fall. At the half we picked up the intensity and that was the key to the game.”

Fossil’s shooting percentage went up in the second half, but defense was a huge key for the Sabercats. Junior, Mike Schilling, took three charges on the night to give the team surges of defensive energy.

“Defense is usually the key to every game. Last night was one of those games that you love to be a part of” said defensive stand out, Mike Schilling. “We truly competed on both sides of the ball.”

Coming off of a great conference win, Fossil will have another tough conference win against Broomfield on Friday.
