Room, by Emma Donoghue, is told from the perspective of a five year old boy named Jack. Room is nothing less than an eye popping, overwhelming, and intriguing book. Jack’s mom, whom he refers to as “Ma” was kidnapped by Old Man Nick. He kept her in a small enclosed room for over seven years. Jack only knows of one world and that is the room he was born in and now growing up in. One day, Ma explains to Jack that there is more to the world then “room”. At first, Jack does not believe Ma, because he only grew up knowing “chair,” “bed,” “stove,” and many other items in room. One day, Ma finally decides she is willing to risk everything to get away from Old Man Nick and escape from room.
Those who have read Room regard this novel as one of high worth. It is not your typical heart throbbing story about a kid getting abducted. Room has many different aspects that make it stand out more than many other books. The story is told from the perspective of a five year old boy and gives his viewpoint on how he is used to never seeing the clouds or other people, only one tiny room. The book stays on the viewpoint of Jack’s new thoughts and questions about the outside world he has only seen on television. Some points in the book felt as if in slow motion, because the entire novel was so descriptive and made you feel as though you were in the room with Jack. This books is an extremely quick read, because all you will want to do is turn the next page.
Room won the award for The New York Times bestseller in 2010. Also, it was The New York Times best book of the year. People of all ages are fascinated by the suspenseful book. If you are looking for a book that breaks your heart and puts the pieces back together, Room is the perfect book for you to pick up.
