Leading the league with 12 points so far in this Spring season, with a shot on goal percentage towering at 100%, with 7 assists in only two games, Garrett Devine is considered one of the most valuable players on Fossil Ridge’s Hockey team.
Devine’s history with the game stretches far back to basically the day that he could walk. His dad, Mark was the Athletic Director at Providence and he would take Garrett on the ice and have him skate around and push crates to keep him standing up and they’d do it hours and hours each day. Garrett is currently a senior here at Fossil Ridge, and has been playing with the Fossil based team for the past 4 years. Along with playing for his school team, he plays for the NCYH Jr. Eagles travel team. Devine commented, “Both school and club are similar skill wise, but of course representing your school has perks that club doesn’t have. On the other hand playing for club offers opportunities that high school does not. So personally I am looking forward to the rest of this season and being able to play alongside other high caliber players that I otherwise wouldn’t get the chance to play with.”
Over the years, Devine has traveled to San Diego, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Phoenix, and Pittsburgh with the Jr Eagles, broadening his social life as well as his hockey IQ. Not only considering his growth as a person and player, he has also reached individual achievements that directly correlate to being the skilled player he is. His father would tell him before games, “Just play the game.” This always seemed to reassure Garrett, and remind him to relax and play like he know’s how to play; with confidence. His father has given him book amounts of advice and Garrett takes it to heart knowing that he wouldn’t be where he is today without the support of his father and family as a whole.
Devine’s achievements have been in the works for seasons on end and as of right now include the following:
- All Area Player of the Year (twice)
- 1st Team All State, Conference (twice)
- Most points by a player in a season at RCS
- Most points by an Underclassmen in a single season
The team is sitting in third place due to the lack of games they’ve played, but lead in goal ration. Their first game against North Alliance resulted in a 10-0 win for the Cats, the second game they took on Cherokee Trail winning 7-2, followed by their most recent game against Windsor which they won 4-1 after moving up to Tier II.
Hockey will be taking him to prep school next year, he is hoping to attend Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, NH. He visited 4 separate schools and has been in contact with the head coach at Wesleyan, also one of the scouts at Dartmouth has helped him with his prep school search. There are great things waiting for him after he leaves Fossil this May, his family has been nothing but supportive with this journey and he can’t wait to continue down this path he’s traveled so far.
