After school one Monday, I entered Room 313 expecting silence and a dictating solemnity. There was a definite concentration, but other than that, I was way off. Every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday after school, a group of dedicated math minds gather as not only colleagues, but as friends. The attendance is a constant 10 people or so, all of which dedicate an hour practicing rigorous math problems and preparing themselves for several math related events including CSU Math Day (including PROBE), College Bowl, and the American Math Competition, many of which are prime scholarship opportunities.
CSU Math Day, which is held Nov. 1, is the occasion the club is currently preparing for. The event will begin with PROBE (Problems Requiring Original and Brilliant Efforts), and a written exam, approximately an hour and half in time restriction, in which the 10 highest scores will receive scholarships. These exams will be followed by competitions between schools and individual students in answering problems quickly and correctly.
It all explained the vigorous training and competitive vibe which was given to me when I entered the club. Yet, there was nothing solemn about their gathering. As Martha Cranor put it, the club “allows kids who want to be competitive to compete, to gain scholarship opportunities… and is a place where math lovers can get together and do math.”
Just as drama club is a place where actors can act and book club is where book lovers can read, our FRHS Math club is a friendly environment for the lover of all things numbers. Mrs. Cranor and the rest of the club invite you to join them every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday after school from 3-4 p.m.
