The holidays are an amazing time of the year.  During my early days as an educator I wanted to ensure that students felt special and cared about during the holiday season. During my first holiday season as a teacher, I invited all of my students to a holiday celebration at my home. I fondly remember that day and have always hung on to the celebration I was able to share with 30 at-risk ninth grade students.

Sometimes it is hard to believe that in our community there are children who go to bed hungry and the thought of holiday gifts aren’t a reality for them.  So for thirty years I have supported Adopt A Family, toy drives, can food drives and Giving Tree.  What may seem like a sacrifice at the time has always been a reminder for me that giving is truly better than receiving.  The value of the gift isn’t what matters – it is the thought. Somehow, knowing I have a small part in making someone smile is a huge reward.

It is my hope that generosity becomes a trademark of Fossil students.  To be thankful, to appreciate, and to in-turn give to others makes the world a better place.  For the children we honor with gifts this holiday—I hope they find joy in knowing that someone they don’t know cares about them.  For our Ridge Nation—I hope we never forget the joy that we can bring to others through a simple act of caring.  It is easier during the holidays to be involved in random acts of kindness, but what really sets people apart are those who continue to give throughout the year.  I challenge you to embrace generosity and live with gratitude.
