Dude. Be Nice week (unity week) was a four day journey for Fossil Ridge students to explore the potential in kindness. A simple act of friendliness or helpfulness can change a person’s day, week, year, or even life. Some Fossil students weighed in on their experiences and thoughts about DBN.
“I personally believe the week can really help people. Just the idea of giving certain people positive attention and showing that you care for them is really cool, and I think the school did a great job at pushing that message,” said Trenton Kyryzowski, a sophomore.
Fossil held activities for DBN week, including a kickoff party, trash pickup, and sporting events such as the first Unified soccer game. Attendance to the girls soccer game and tennis match were also encouraged, and rallies were held for the matches. Whiteboards with questions for students to answer were also placed around the school, including “What would you do if you could not fail?” and “What made you smile today?”
Each day had a different theme; whether it be giving back to students, teachers, or the community, Fossil students worked avidly to lend a helping hand. “I love the idea of being nice to the staff at our school,” said Kyryzowski. “They’ve always worked so hard, and I don’t think they get enough respect for [that].” Many teachers were given gifts such as gift cards and flowers to show appreciation for all the time they spend working to help students.
“It was pretty cheesy, but I liked the whiteboards in the halls,” said sophomore Sarah Perkins. “But overall it was way better than last year’s unity week.”
Just because DBN week has come to a close, there is no reason to stop spreading positive vibes. This year’s unity week has given students the tools to use for a lifetime of happiness and helping others.
