On Oct. 20 the Fossil Ridge Forensics teams competed in the second novice tournament of the year, and they are off to a good start. Last weekend the forensics team (led by Language Arts instructor Deana Kochis) had four students place in the novice tournament.
Freshman XuSong Ho took home a first place ribbon in his Lincoln-Douglass debate after competing against 33 other students from across Colorado. The tournament was only the second that XuSong had ever competed in, being his first season in debate as a freshman at FRHS. “We could not be more proud,” Mrs. Kochis said.
The last student to place in the tournament was freshman Megan Rutberg, who placed fourth in drama. Unlike debate or speech where the students prepare their own speeches, the drama competition consists of the competitors preforming a unique monologue that they put together. Rutberg placed fifth in the last tournament at Northridge, so the second tournament was an improvement from her last competition. In addition to XuSong, freshman Hannah Kim and junior Jason Morey also took home ribbons for placing first in the public forum category. Kim had placed in the last tournament, but this was Morey’s first time competing. They also competed against students from all around Colorado, beating all 10 teams competing in the debate.
“The forensics students and I could not be more proud about their accomplishments,” Kochis said. “It was an exciting ride back to Fossil that evening.”
The next tournament for the FRHS Forensics team will be at Thompson Valley High School on Nov. 3 from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.
