Controversy Over Staff Parking
March 13, 2019
The Fossil Ridge High School parking lot is filling up each day. More spots are being taken up due to the new drivers around the school. Each row is being taken up by both staff and students. There are three main parking lots on the Fossil campus. There is the staff parking lot and two student lots. In one of the student lots, there is also a row of parking spots made for staff.
The row of staff parking is closest to the entrance of the school, which makes it convenient for teachers and staff to park there. Lately, an issue has arisen regarding the open parking spots in the staff lot. Students have started to park in the row of staff parking because it is located in the student lot and there have been claims of available spots that are not being used by the Fossil staff.
The issue with the staff lot is that students are taking up spaces that are reserved for teachers and staff. The students that have been parking in the staff lot have received warnings for taking up those parking spots. There has been a feeling of frustration coming from students who receive warnings for parking in a spot that has not been taken by staff. Many students who have first period off try to find the closest parking spot to the school but are unsuccessful because of the parking spots that are taken; this results in their parking in the very back of the school student lot. The students have been using the spots in the staff lot to avoid parking so far away from the school.
There have been many statements from students about receiving warnings about parking in the staff lot, but the same argument has been stated as, “I don’t understand why we can’t park In those staff spots, they are never even taken by the staff it’s reserved for.” While students claim this is unfair, our staff has their reasons for keeping the students in their own lot. Fossil security guard, Ken Lowery explained, “Staff parking is used by substitutes because they don’t have a key card to get into the building from the main staff lot and also by the staff in the front office.” While spots are taken by staff, there are empty spots that are not filled every day and that is when students tend to park there.
This has been a huge complaint for students be
cause of the warnings that are being put on windshields for parking in an open spot. The warnings being given are so important because if students get a certain amount of warnings, their cars will have parking boots put on their wheels.
This issue has yet to be resolved. Students will continue to park in the staff lot and also will continue to argue about why they should be able to. The Fossil security will continue to give out warnings for taking parking spots in the staff lot. As of right now, there is no sign of change coming from either the students or the Fossil staff.

I find the last paragraph interesting. “Students will continue to park in the staff lot and also will continue to argue about why they should be able to.” Parking in the teacher parking lot is not an argument, nor is it up for debate. I don’t have a 1st or 2nd period and I always struggle to find a parking space close to the front of the school. But that doesn’t mean that I will be parking in the teacher parking lot for my own convenience. If it really bothers students that they can’t use the staff parking spaces, they should arrive at school earlier to find a closer spot.
