Fossil Wins City Meet on Senior Night

Matyi Mayo, Staff writer

The Fossil Girls Swim Team started out their “championship season” strong as they dominated the City Meet on Tuesday night. The Sabercats won with a final score of 757, defeating the runner-up team by 246 points.

The City Meet, especially for seniors, is always one of the most meaningful meets of the year. It is the last time they get to represent Fossil at their home pool. Alongside that, it is a day where all of the seniors are recognized and greeted by their parents and friends in front of the home crowd.

The seniors showed up big time, and were the primary reason the Sabercats were able to win the meet. Coach Rodriguez wanted to start off the meet with all of the seniors on the same relay to give them the opportunity to swim together one last time. Jaidyn Nelson, Riley Green, Emma Stahl, and Summer Silverts all swam together on the 200 medley relay and raced their way to a third place finish. The relay was immediately followed up by a fifth place finish, by senior Summer Silverts in the 200 freestyle. The 200 IM was up next, where senior Riley Green finished third. She was followed up by fellow classmate, Jaidyn Nelson, who finished fifth.

Unlike most other swimmers, Emma Stahl was put in her primary event, the 50 freestyle. She did not back down from the opportunity at all. She touched the wall first by over a half a second, which, for being such a short race, is a huge gap between first and second. She was followed up by fellow senior classmates, Ella Peterson, and Emily Timmons. They finished twelfth and thirteenth.

The Sabercats truly took control of the meet. They won all eight individual events and won two out of the three relays. It was a great outcome and a very special day for the seniors.
