Fossil loses heartbreaking final home game

The Fossil Ridge softball team suffered their first home loss of the year 11-6 to the Legacy Lightning.

Fossil started the game off strong, taking a 3-0 lead in the first two innings of the game. The Sabercats were firing on all cylinders and looked dominant early.

Legacy tied the game in the top of the third inning, but Fossil scored two more in the bottom of the third, maintaining the lead 5-3.

But the Lightning just hung around and slowly chipped away at the lead, and only trailed 6-5 through five innings.

Despite never leading the entire game, Legacy stayed strong and scored 6 unanswered runs in the final 2 innings, to pull off the upset victory. The Sabercats just didn’t have any answers for the Lightning..

Fossil(18-3, 6-2 in conference play), have struggled late in the year going 1-3 in their past four games, as their quality of opponents have increased. The Sabercats have played three games against teams ranked top 10 in the state, losing all three of those games.

The latest one was shocking as Fossil beat Legacy earlier this year as a part of the FAN tournament, defeating them in the finals 9-3. However, since that loss Legacy has won their last ten games in a row.

With this loss the Sabercats have systematically been eliminated from winning the Front Range League, with that honor going to either Legacy or Horizon.

However the Sabercats will be fighting for a top 4 seeding in the state tournament, as that will allow them two guaranteed home games during the tournament, dates of which will be announced shortly. Fossil won the tournament from the four-spot last year, so they understand better than anyone how important those home games really are.
