The boys’ golf team completed their two month season at the state tournament on Tuesday, October 5. They finished in 4th place with a final score of 459 strokes, or a +23.

The Sabercats opened up on the right foot, finishing the first day in 2nd place, only trailing Arapahoe by one stroke. A big part of this strong position was senior Miles Atkinson, who shot a 71 and had the second lowest score through the first day of action. The team highlight came on hole fifteen, as three of Fossil’s golfers sunk birdies to score a -3 on the hole.

However the second day was much rougher on Fossil, as three of their four golfers ended the day with a score worse than in their first outing. The team as a whole scored 13 strokes worse than on day 1, and finished in 7th place for the day. The Sabercats struggled as a team through holes 10-14, scoring +10 as a team through that five-hole stretch.

Despite the lackluster second day, Fossil still had a strong state performance, ending one stroke away from a podium spot. The Sabercats finished two spots higher than their previous appearance, as they will continue to climb the mountain back to another state title.

With two of their four state players graduating, Miles Atkinson and Alex Rogers, the Fossil golf team will have to look to several new faces to lead their program into 2022.

The other two golfers, junior Grant Samuelson and freshman Austin Barry, will be sticking around and looking to take this experience into the season next year.
