Sabercats make it to semis in State Softball Tournament

The Fossil Ridge softball season ends during the semifinals of the State Tournament, unable to repeat as State Champions.

The three seeded Sabercats started the tournament off strong, defeating fourteenth ranked Arvada West 6-1, and number six Mountain Vista 3-2. However, Fossil fell short against the number two team Columbine High School 1-0.

The Sabercats pitching from senior Nikki McGaffin stole the show. McGaffin only allowed four runs all tournament, and hit 800 career strikeouts.

Fossil’s downfall came in their inability to hit during the final game, as they were unable to score all game. The Sabercats had several runners in scoring position, including during the final inning, but were unable to bring them home.

Fossil had a highly impressive season, finishing with a 24-4 record, their 0.86 winning percentage, their highest since 2017. This season also marks Fossil’s third consecutive trip to the state semifinals, and their eighth in the past eleven years.

The Sabercats will now look towards the future, as six of their nine starters are returning, four of whom will be entering their senior season.
