The PSD Stars boys ice hockey team just wrapped up their spectacular season in dramatic fashion.
The Stars went all the way to the State Championship game against Valor Christian on March 3, but just came up short with a 7-4 loss.
Though the Championship wasn’t secured by the Stars, a look back onto their spectacular season where they dominated.
Some key players to the Stars success include Hayden Williamson, senior left wing, led the team in goals this year, collecting 24. Danny Campbell was a playmaker and made 18 assists on the year to help his team dominate.
Matt Yunker and London Salmela were also outstanding this year with their scoring and playmaking efforts.
To start the season, on November 22, 2024, the Stars played Mountain View where they lost 7-6 in overtime.
With a loss to start the season and being 0-1, the Stars got to work and ended up not losing another game until the State Championship game over 3 months later.
From 0-1 to 18-2-2 to end the season, the Stars dominated for 3 months straight.
Valor Christian and PSD faced off twice before the championship, where PSD won both outings. The first one on 12/7 where they won 7-1 at home, and on 2/1 with a 1-0 victory at Valor.
A notable victory this season was Heritage on 12/10 with a 6-3 win over the Eagles. Heritage ended the Stars season last year in the first round of the playoffs, so the Stars were ready for revenge.
PSD was so good at one point they were ranked number one in the nation near the end of the regular season.
In an interview with Yunker he commented on his takeaways of the season.
“I really loved everything about the season except I wanted the championship bad,” he said
Yunker is a senior, meaning he doesn’t have any more seasons left. A championship in his senior year would’ve put him at ease and accomplished.
“Even though we couldn’t perform how we wanted to in the championship, the season was super fun and we did a lot of good things,” Yunker said.
Yunker also commented about the relationships that he made though his four years playing.
“Hockey has been a part of my life forever and I’ve made so many memories and friends which made me really dedicated to get better.”
Overall, a season worthy of being celebrated.
