The third annual Kids vs. Cops Hockey Game will be a rematch between Poudre School District (PSD) principals, and Fossil Ridge’s Mark Barry wants the win.
“They gave us each a stick and then we alternated an empty net shot from center ice and whoever ever had the most won,” said Barry about the annual event. “Last year against Poudre’s principal I scored four goals and she scored three goals.”
The principal shootout during the first intermission will be part of the annual charity event, which will start at 6 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 7 at NoCo Ice Center.
The Kids vs Cops hockey game is run by the Brave Warriors Hockey Foundation, a nonprofit first responder hockey league, founded by Fossil School Resource Officer Adam Brunjes. The hockey game is played between local police officers and the PSD Stars high school hockey team. Tickets are $10, and all of the money goes towards the PSD Stars.
“I saw online that another department was doing these kids vs cops hockey games, and I wanted to organize something similar,” Brunjes said.
Brunjes not only organized the event, but he is competing as well.
“I get a bunch of cops that play hockey on a team, and then the Stars get a roster together,” Brunjes said. “It’s always been a passion of mine to combine hockey and police work.”
In addition to the principal shoutout, Barry said the event promotes a lot of positivity.
“It’s going to be fun seeing our police officers in their hockey uniform because it personalizes them as humans,” Barry said. “They’re not always police so I think that’s one of the most exciting things.”
The biggest part of the Kids vs Cops hockey game is without a doubt how the money goes to the PSD Stars.
“If I could describe the event, I would say giving back,” Brunjes said. “They are donations to the PSD Stars so all of the money we make is going to the team.”
