SoMo, independent R&B artist from the small town of Denison, Texas, has been gaining popularity over the years, especially with teenage girls. His star began to rise after releasing “Take Care Medley,” a rendition of Drake’s album, combining select cuts from his album in a series of continuous covers.
The cover is over six minutes long and the original video posted on YouTube currently has more than four million views. Altogether, SoMo’s original songs, medleys, covers and renditions have received more than 30 million views on YouTube.
Then SoMo released “Ride” in his 2012 debut mix tape “My Life,” and later released the risqué music video early in 2013. The video has accumulated 1.2 million views since its release in 2013.
After concluding the “Show Off” tour, he is currently halfway through his second national headliner, “Ride.” He played the Aggie Theatre in Fort Collins Oct. 26, and the Bluebird in Denver Oct. 27. He still has several shows before the conclusion of the tour, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, Austin, Dallas, Houston and more.
His real name is Joseph Somo, and though he has gained a lot of fame, most of his background remains unknown. Perhaps he likes to maintain a mysterious reputation, but it won’t be that way before long, because he continues to gain popularity. Obviously his philosophy has been reinforced by his success: “If it sounds good, people will listen.”
