Sunday evening before last unfolded the most iconic and most important night for movies of the year, the 86th annual Academy Awards. (Also, and more commonly called, The Oscars.)
Lately, American award shows have been okay, or less than okay in the VMA’s case, but the Oscars this year were actually and surprisingly enjoyable to watch. There was nobody begging for attention with scandalous, and less than flattering outfits or word choices. The fashion reigned supreme and was seriously classy.
Lady Gaga (why she was at the Oscars, I don’t know) looked absolutely stunning in a pink Versace dress, and her choice of frock made me realize that I prefer regal-and-couture gaga over meat-dress gaga any day.
The other best dressed, in my opinion, was a tie between Jennifer Lawrence and Lupita Nyong’o. Whereas Lawrence graced the award show with a sexy and ultimately flattering red gown, Nyong’o blessed the red carpet with a jaw-dropping light blue dress.
The award show itself was hosted by the one and only, talk show extraordinaire, Ellen Degeneres. If Ellen didn’t have you laughing the entire time then you were probably not paying attention. Her humor and respect for the show showed through the entire night.
The best segment of Ellen’s hosting is when she actually ordered pizza for the A-list celebs in attendance. When the pizza guy showed up, the shock was evident on his face. After serving pizza slices to celebrities to the likes of Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Lawrence; Edgar Martirosyan became probably the most famous pizza delivery man in the world.
Also, Ellen broke twitter. She literally broke twitter. She took a selfie (the most epic selfie ever taken I might add) of her, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Brangelina, Julia Roberts, etc. She then challenged the world to make this selfie the most retweeted thing on twitter, and the world did just that. Because of the sudden excess of retweets, twitter’s system crashed momentarily but then was back up to speed in no time. The selfie now has 3.2 million retweets.
As awards go, I think that the movies and actors that were chosen for each award deserved it. 12 Years A Slave took home the most envious award of the night, “Best Picture.” The movie was pinned up in a match against some other great titles like Gravity and The Wolf of Wall Street, but the film truly did deserve the award. Matthew McConaughey made his mark in the “Best Actor” column with his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. Lupita Nyong’o was granted the opposite award, “Best Supporting Actress” for her work in 12 Years A Slave, which was a tearjerker honestly.
The 2014 Oscars are one to be put down in history. The performances, nominations and overall atmosphere blew the roof off of any recent awards show. Even though stupid movies are made, the movie industry still proves to be more mature and classier than the music industry. Let’s just hope the music one follows suit soon enough.

Didn’t Lupita win Best Supporting Actress for 12 Years? I might be wring but that’s what I thought she won.
