All the way from down under comes former Aussie model and surfacing female rapper Iggy Azalea. Her new album, The New Classic drops April 18 and it’s an understatement to say that I’m extremely excited for it.
Amethyst Amelia Kelly, internationally known by her stage name Iggy Azalea, dreamed of being a star since she was young, and when she was only 16-years-old, she boarded a plane alone to the U.S. to try to set her dreams into motion. Her music is authentic and inspiring, and there’s nothing like it that I’ve heard before.
In her 2013 song, “Work,” Azalea depicts her struggle on making it, and how hard she worked to be where she is now. “No money, no family. 16 in the middle of Miami… Pledge allegiance to the struggle, ain’t been easy… This dream is all that I need, cause it’s all that I ever had.”
Another song by Azalea that has recently been released to the radio, “Fancy,” is seriously my favorite song at the moment. The atmosphere of the song has some retro vibes to it, and her unique rapping voice is really apparent on the track. As if a cool retro vibe song wasn’t enough, the song also comes with a music video that’s ace, where Iggy reenacts the most classic 90’s chick flick, Clueless. The symbolism is spot on, even down to the outfits. The amusing side to Azalea that the video shows off gives her more personality and makes her very likable. (If I do say so myself.)
There are not a lot of female rappers in the music business, at least not as many as males. With her new album and can-do-anything attitude, it think Iggy Azalea has more than a good chance at breaking this cycle, and putting a foot down for women into the rapping world.
