The media’s obsession with body image perfection has gone so far downhill that I think that the entertainment industry is the culprit of imposing lies into minds across the globe.
This exaggeration has gotten to the point where actors and actresses are barely recognized for their talents anymore, it’s all about what they look like in a swimsuit and what new fad diet they are on. People have become so obsessed with the celebrity lifestyle, that instead of admiring these people, they want to literally be them. In a study done by a British lingerie company, Bluebella, results show the deviation of these celebrities.
The study was asking regular men and women what the essential perfect female and male body consisted of by asking people to combine several different aspects of celebrity bodies. The problem I have with this is that these celebrities, human beings if you’ve forgotten, are being nitpicked and are having parts of themselves selected as better than every other aspect of their body. It’s sending the message of being selective about who you are to not only the public, but also to these famous people, which is first off unrealistic and secondly disgusting. Saying that Rosie Huntington’s legs or Harry Styles’ hair is the only desirable feature of them is revolting to me, but it’s most likely detrimental to these famous peoples’ views of themselves. The photos below show the results of Bluebella’s studies for the ideal man and woman.
The message these companies should be sending is loving what you have, not wanting to change everything you’ve got. The way you were born and the way you grow is all you’ve been given, so when people envy others for what they were born with, it’s just an unrealistic fantasy. Unless you want to spend thousands of dollars on a potentially dangerous and health impacting procedures to alter yourself, hating your body is incomprehensible.
Also, as long as can be remembered, when someone thinks the words “perfect body” the words “Victoria’s Secret” flash through many minds. While Victoria’s Secret models are incredibly beautiful, they are also incredibly and also dangerously thin. The average Victoria’s Secret model is 5’9 and weighs anywhere from 113-130 pounds. According to the center of Health Check Systems, a healthy woman of 5’9 should have a weight ranging from
139-153 pounds. This means that most, if not all, of these models can range from 10-40 pounds underweight, which is very scary for these girls. This only means that idolizing these models is a poison to the mind of a woman.
Just look at this image of the Victoria’s Secret “Love My Body” campaign, compared to Dove’s “Real Beauty” campaign. (Below)
Finally, my number one anger trigger is the whole “post-baby body” junk that clogs up the headlines. God forbid that someone had an actual human being grow inside of them; they apparently need to be slim and fit as quick as possible after delivering their child. That’s all I have to say about that issue.
Sadly, this is the way our media and pop culture is, and currently remains. With organizations like Dove and others (Special K for example), there is hope that the perception of the human body and its outlook could be helped and better nurtured in the future. But for now, the entertainment franchise is corrupt in their opinions of perfection because perfection is absolutely unattainable. Perfection is a facade, because perfection is in the originality of the being. A text post on the website tumblr.com, reads “Look at nature. Look at flowers. We never walk into our garden and say ‘Oh wouldn’t that flower be so much prettier if it were taller? Or red instead of pink? No, we don’t. Because nature was created perfect just as it is. And so are we. We are part of nature, we are how we’re meant to be, we are perfect just the way we are.” Just let that sink in.
