Whether you notice it or not, when you are investigating the newest trends, they are usually repeat offenders. Fashion has always been influenced by the past, but the oldies are always revamped.
‘50s
This decade was filled with milkshakes, drive-in dates and sock hops, so it had its fair share of fun and care free times. These care free times were reflected in the fashion, and we draw a few of those wonderful styles into today. The biggest trend in woman’s summer fashion right now is skater skirts, also known as circle skirts. These beauties are everywhere lately; they are easy to style and they match the easy going atmosphere that summer brings. This pink one reflects the cute colors of delish summer ice cream. Peplums, believe it or not, have escaped from the ‘50s. They originated with women wanting to accentuate their curves further, and peplums haven’t lost their core purpose. They can be as simple as this black top, or can be used on dresses with beautiful patterns. T-shirts dresses are also popping up everywhere, but they are now more commonly known as shift dresses. They are simple, yet darling and look good on any body shape.
‘60s
The Beatles and The Stones brought distraction and fun to an otherwise very serious period in history. The ‘60s were filled with strong political and social movements, and the fashion evolved right alongside society. High waisted shorts are the largest trend to have emerged from this time. High waisted shorts are a staple in anyone’s closet, whether they are denim or crazy patterned. These from Love Culture are optimal. The next trend is wearing the same patterned top and bottom, like this outfit Selena Gomez rocked at the iHeartRadio Awards. We can’t forget about spaghetti strap baby doll dresses. These comfortable and easy breezy dresses are directly inspired by the sixties; this one from Asos is gorgeous.
‘70s
The ‘70s brought us punk fashion, midi length skirts and dresses, crop tops and the leather invasion. Punk fashion has been seeping its way into popular trends this season, except now it is more commonly known as grunge. This trend first emerged in the late ‘70s around the time of The Ramones and The Clash. Arguably the biggest “new” trend in fashion is the midi length; designers can’t seem to get enough of them. They do have their new fun twists, like this skirt in a beautiful floral pattern.
‘80s
Every single time I go shopping with my mother, I always, without fail, pick up something that drives her to say, “I had one just like that in high school!” As much as we want to deny it, we are wearing a lot of the same trends our mothers were wearing. Statement necklaces (I have expressed my love for them before) are directly inspired by the huge, bold, and not to mention, chunky jewelry from the ‘80s. An outfit wasn’t put together without pieces that drew attention to themselves. A trend that has seemed to exploded this spring are shorts that are made of comfortable flowy material. These shorts aren’t too tight, but they aren’t that baggy early. Take a look at these from Pacsun if you are still a little lost. These beauties are pulled from the ‘80s, and were affectionately called “happy pants.” Let’s not forget skorts. These bottoms are the perfect combination of classy and comfortable. They are made with bold, energetic patterns, just like they were when they first emerged.
‘90s
The ‘90s are exploding this season. More than anything the grunge look is coming back. For example, wearing flannels around your waist, pulled right from the ‘90s. Punk accessories, faux leather, beanies, you name it. This year’s most infamous trend, leggings, are from this decade. We can’t seem to turn away from the comfy bottoms that can be styled up or down, but they aren’t a new idea. Cute overalls have returned as well. While they are tighter, and styled more thoughtfully, the idea is the same. Let’s not forget about those bomber jackets. These pieces can be transformed into any style, classic or rock. They are now in all patterns and colors, like another ‘90s trend, pastels.
