Friday night’s matchup between the Fossil Ridge Saber Cats and Boulder Panthers looked
to be just a repeat of Fossil Ridge history, continuing the losing streak on opening games. The Cats had never won an opening game in school history, but all of that changed with a 24-14 win over the Panthers.
The Saber Cats running attack was potent in the Friday night matchup. The two headed monster
of Andrew Sprayberry and Zack Feuer ran for a combined total of 197 yards in the opening win.
But that was not the only bright sport of the Fossil football team. The Fossil Ridge defense held
the Panthers to 268 total yards of offense and was the more disciplined team in the long run. Boulder was able to rack up 150 yards on 15 penalties.
Quarterback Mitch Salmela was able to complete 7 of his 14 passes for 78 yards in Fridays victory. Cole Schilling led the team in receptions with 38 receiving yards on 5 catches and a 17 yard touchdown strike from Salmela late in the 2nd quarter.
In its ten year existence,, Fossil Ridge has never been known for the sport of football, but since Coach Brian Tinker took the helm for Fossil Ridge football fortunes seem to be on the rise.
