Mazda takes the world’s favorite roadster into the next chapter
In 1989, Mazda introduced the Miata roadster. It was a small, cheap, and lightweight, two seat roadster that harkened back to the classic British sports cars, but with a reliable, Japanese powertrain. The car was an immediate hit, selling millions throughout its 25 year lifespan. It’s now time for the fourth generation to continue the legacy.
When the car was unveiled on Wednesday, September 3 , Mazda provided very few details on this latest car. For the first time, the Miata sees a complete reboot of the chassis, thanks to Mazda’s suite of Skyactive Technologies that it launched a few years ago to making their cars more efficient without losing their “Zoom-Zoom” feeling. This helped drop 220 pounds out of the old cars already light 2,482 pound curb weight.
Mazda didn’t provide any information on the powertrain, but the car is rumored to have a tuned version the Mazda3’s 2.0 liter, four cylinder engine. In the Mazda3 it makes 155 horsepower and 150 foot-pounds of torque. Since the current car makes 167 hp, expect more power to come out of this engine.
As for design, the Miata sees a complete refresh with a brand new exterior look. The interior also gets and all new design as well as new technology to keep up with todays market.
The New Miata starts a joint venture with Mazda and Fiat group to share the Miata’s chassis. Both Fiat and Alfa Romeo have intentions on making their own versions of this chassis. Alfa Romeo’s car is rumored to be called the 2C Spider while Fiat might bring the Barchetta back to market.
We will see more information come out in the near future so stay tuned for more on the 2016 Miata.
