The fans that waited patiently outside of French Field during the one hour rain delay were rewarded once the game kicked off. A defensive clinic, aided by the wet field conditions, was put on by both teams with Evan Bergeson nailing the 30 yard kick to win the game for Fossil, 17-14.
Most of the first quarter consisted of both offensives exchanging three and outs. The game was scoreless until a long snap over Poudre quarterback James Campbell resulted in a recovery by David Kravec in the end zone for a Fossil Ridge touchdown.
After halftime, Poudre cornerback Jason Wooldridge intercepted Griffin Roberts’ pass and returned it for six. It didn’t take long for the SaberCat defense to respond as linebacker Dylan Johnston intercepted Campbell and returned it for another Fossil defensive score.
Early in the fourth quarter, Poudre tied the game at 14 after a Dillon Foster touchdown run. Late in the game, the Fossil Ridge offense mustered a 40 yard drive to put their star kicker in field goal range.
With two seconds on the clock, everyone’s eyes were on Evan Bergeson and the Fossil Ridge special teams unit. Poudre called several timeouts attempting to ice Bergeson. After drilling a 48 yard kick earlier this year against Collins, 30 yards seemed simple for the Fossil kicker.
Just like a scene from the movies, Bergeson drilled the 30 yard kick right up the middle. Fossil Ridge erupted with cheers. They had just upset Poudre on their homecoming game. Bergeson was the hero, sealing the SaberCats’ victory, 17-14.
