On Wednesday November 4, the Fossil Cheer Team hosted the league cheer leading competition in the FRHS gym. This competition consisted of varsity cheer, JV cheer, and dance teams from school teams in the league. The overall standings for the competition were; in first place, Fossil varsity cheer, second place, Greeley west co ed varsity cheer, and in third place Fossil JV cheer. Fossil performed very well on their home court.
Bailey Coker, one of the captains of the varsity cheer team, describes, “for this comp, we worked on our routine since May so we could get it to be perfect. I feel that we did our very best tonight. Most everyone landed their stunts and performed very well. We won leagues last year so now we are back to back league champions.”
At the competition, the Fossil varsity cheer team had a very exciting and difficult routine. In the routine they had an all team standing tuck, round off back handspring tucks, their competition cheer, full-ups, jumps, stunts, and a pyramid. Their routine took two and a half minutes, ending with a pyramid that included every member of the team.
The JV team also did an amazing job. To have a JV team place in the same competition as their varsity team is huge. Bailey mentioned, “we have a really good JV cheer team so it wasn’t a surprise that they placed so well in the competition. Overall, I think fossil performed really well”
More competitions are coming up for the cheer team in the near future. Bailey adds, “for our competitions coming up, we are going to be really challenged because the teams we are competing against are really good, but i’m really excited to see how we do”. Their next competition is tomorrow, Saturday November 7. One focus of the varsity team is preparing to compete in state in the spring. Bailey mentions, “As a team, were hoping to make finals at state this year! And last Saturday, we got a bid to go to nationals in February! We are all so excited!”
Aside from competitions, with the end of the football season, Fossil Cheer is beginning to prepare to cheer boys and girls basketball. Baileys concludes, “as a team we are all excited to cheer basketball because it’s exciting to be right up next to the court. We feel more involved when we cheer on the court during basketball season”.
