On the first Thursday of every month, a team dedicated completely to Fossil and the culture it has meets in the Media center to talk about how to change Fossil for the better. This is Fossil’s Culture and Climate team. Assistant Principal Bradley Nye said that, the Culture and Climate team is “A group that is open to all students, all staff, and all parents who are interested about having a positive effect on the climate and culture of Fossil Ridge High School.”
Some students wonder why they should care. Students at Fossil Ridge should care because they have been helping the culture and climate team whether they knew it or not. In some recent advisory classes students have been asked to fill out a survey, from the National School Climate Center, that gave student feedback on Fossil Ridge as a school. The Climate and Culture team are currently trying to use results from the survey so they can hear from different groups what are the positives of Fossil and what can be improved upon and developing a plan to work toward improving Fossil.
Chances are most students here at Fossil aren’t aware that Culture and Climate team exists and that is most likely because it only started up last year. A core group of staff members who are sponsors of different organizations like Student Council, Diversity Leadership, Ridge TV, Student Ambassadors, Drama, Yearbook, Etched in Stone, wanted to bring their organizations together so they could unify the work they were all doing. Mr. Nye says, “They [staff sponsors] recognized that those separate organizations had an effect on our climate and culture by just the very fact that they existed.”
The future hope and goal for the Culture and Climate Team is to get more people involved, even if they aren’t currently involved at Fossil. The Culture Team wants people to step up, get involved, and be heard. They want feedback on what is and is not going well at Fossil and they don’t just want some feedback, they are hoping to grow in order to hear from every student at Fossil; hearing from everyone is only a first step, they also want students, parents, and staff to take action and change Fossil for the better.
