Tuesday, December 1st the girls varsity basketball sabercats begin the season with a big win against Valor Christian, 49-37, in a tournament at ThunderRidge High School. The first game jitters were apparent in the first half of the game but then the team got in their groove and settled down to finish the game strong.
The sabercats’ starting point guard, Sami Steffeck, was one of the key players of the game, scoring a game-high 15 points to lead the team to a win. Senior, Regan Wess, put up 12 points, while McKenna Schultz and Britt Mishak added 8 and 7 points, respectively. At the end of each quarter, Fossil was winning by two or more baskets. The score was 7-4 at the end of the first quarter with one of the two three-pointers by Sami Steffeck. The other three-pointer Sami Steffeck drained was a half court shot that ended the first half 16-12. The third quarter was a the best quarter for the sabercats, they played great defense that only allowed the other team to score 2 points. At the end of the third quarter the score was 28-15. Finishing the game strong, the sabercats fought hard to keep their lead until the final buzzer, ending the game 49-37.
After the big win the SaberCats are ranked No. 9 in Class 5A in the CHSAA preseason poll and No. 2 in the state.
