The girls’ softball team is conference champions for the first time in school history.
On Oct. 4 the regular season came to an end with a victory against Poudre High School. Not only did the Fossil Ridge High School softball team end the season strong with a 17-2 record and a nine game winning streak, but they ended their season as the 5A Front Range conference champions. Though the game against Poudre was the last regular season game the real girls clinched the division the previous game against the then number one team in the conference, Loveland High School.
The team currently is ninth in the state and 87 in the nation. Although the team is led by its skillful seniors: Brittany Younan, Hayley Novacek, Courtney Lecher and Emily Burns, the 11 other roster spots on the team are made of contributing underclassman. Sophomore Berkley Calapp has the highest batting average, .588, and freshman Haley Donaldson has the most homeruns on the team with nine. Also, the team’s two starting pitchers are underclassman; Murphy McRoberts and Breanna Hamilton. The four seniors are part of the Triple Crown Stars and are the captains on the team. The Triple Crown Stars is one of the most competitive prestigious teams in Colorado.
“Our team works hard and we connect as a unit,” said senior third baseman, Courtney Lecher on their team chemistry for the end of the season. The FRHS girls’ team also has accumulated one of the highest batting average in the state with a .478 team batting average and the lowest average on the team only at about .250.
The team has lost two games in the early part of the regular season; both were decided by four runs or less. The team has dealt with the losses in various ways but one thing stays consistent; “We all get really mad and we talk about what happened, but we just move on to the next game and use it to motivate us even more for upcoming games,” senior Brittany Younan said.
The FRHS team is having the best year in school history. Since the school opened in 2004, the softball team has never reached this amount of success. Up until now the best record the team had was 17-5 compared to the 17-2 record they have going into Regionals. “We have dramatically improved since I got here my sophomore year. My first year we didn’t even make it to state. Last year we made it to state and lost, but this year we are a major contender for state. I think it has lots to do with our team chemistry and our strong hitting.”
