The Fossil Ridge Softball Team beat the Fairview Knights 19-0 to open league play with a victory. The game was finished by the third inning due to the CHSAA mercy rule.

The Saber cats pitching was lights out as usual, with Nikki McGaffin and Brooklyn Cardenas combining for a no hitter in the three innings played.

Fossil looked impressive offensively, being patient by taking walks and waiting for the best pitch. The Saber cats would also take advantage of many Fairview missteps, with several runs scored off of both errors and balls in the dirt.

This game just serves as a reminder to the true skill of this Fossil team, as they improve to 12-0 on the season, 1-0 in 5A Front Range League play.

The Saber cats will look to keep the momentum rolling the rest of the season, as they will continue to play more games against Front League teams, in hopes of winning the league for the first time since the 2017 season.

Senior Lizzy Browning attributes the team’s success to their dedication.

“Team’s put in a lot of work, we’ve been working really hard…we deserve it and we’re looking to win a lot more,” Browning said.

Despite all the winning, the most fun for these players is often found off the field.

“[The best part]…probably just practices and team dinners, and hanging out as a team.” Browning said.

After Fossil’s early stretch of success so far, they feel confident they can be the first team to win back-to-back state titles since Legend in 2017-18.

“[On going back to back]…I think we have been putting in a lot of work to go there and that is definitely our goal, and I think we can achieve it,” Browning said.

Fossil will be back in action when they travel to Westminster to take3 on Mountain Range on Tuesday, September 14.
