On January 4, Fossil Boys Basketball won their first game of 2022, defeating Longmont 86-63.

Fossil started strong, as they held a 31-22 lead heading into halftime. However, Fossil struggled to find their rhythm in the third quarter. After being outscored 24-22 in the third, the Sabercats led by only seven entering the fourth.

The Sabercats were less prepared for this game, as this was Fossil’s first game in two weeks, and they had limited practices over winter break. Junior Domenic Leone spoke about dealing with the rust.

“Little bit out of shape, had too many cookies [over break], but getting back there,” Leone said.

However the Sabercats played hard, as they outscored Longmont 33-17 in the 4th quarter, extending their winning streak to five games. Fossil out hustled their opponents all night, with Domenic Leone leading the charge. Leone was sprinting up and down the court, playing hard on both ends of the floor and putting pressure on the Longmont defense. Leone scored 10 points, collecting 2 rebounds and 2 blocks as well. Leone spoke on what motivated his effort and his drive during game time.

“It’s all in practice…I guard Brock [Mishak] most of the time, it’s really good for me to get used to that,” Leone said.

Fossil now looks ahead to a rare non-conference game against city-rival Rocky Mountain on January 6.
