The Fossil Ridge High School boy’s basketball team defeated Monarch High School 78-53, making a big statement in their first playoff game in their first playoff game of 2022.

The Sabercats played the Monarch Coyotes earlier in the season, defeating them 69-47 at home. However the Coyotes came out more determined, as Fossil only led by eight points at halftime.

“They were definitely a more challenging team this time around,” senior, Brock Mishak, said.

Fossil’s victory came in large part due to a marvelous third quarter, as they outscored Monarch 32-9. These large performances came from Mishak and Domenic Leone.

Mishak scored 16 points during the game, leading the way with three three-pointers and helping set a tone for the entire team. However, Fossil’s leading scorer came from the junior, Leone.

Leone scored a career-high 21 points, shooting an incredible 10 of 14 from the field, including an impressive dunk through contact.

Fossil’s playoff road continues on their home court as they take on 15th seeded Ralston Valley on Wednesday, March 2.
