Review: The Batman takes a new approach to the series
April 1, 2022
2022’s The Batman takes a new angle on the Bat with a darker and more mysterious outlook. The movie follows an early version of the vigilante, taking place during the second year of his crusade as he tries to solve a deep, dark mystery.
Robert Pattinson’s acting really ties the film together with his ability to capture the darker tone of Batman. His performance is nothing short of stellar, with mannerisms that are expressive of his other works, especially when he is playing unhinged, “crazy” characters. What makes him so good at playing these weird characters is his past works, many of which he acts insane, deranged, and sort of psychotic, which is exactly why he is able to bring so much more to the character than we have seen before. This film’s new adaptation of Batman gives the filmmakers and Pattinson a new opportunity to capture the terrifying feeling that Batman should give off.
The cinematography is some of the best out there, with its visually stunning and breathtaking sights. Batman uses cinematography to further express the dark, grungy, broody tune of this new Gotham. The academy award-winning cinematographer, Greig Fraser, really brings you into the story and shocks you with his beautiful shots. The car chase scene is one of the most well-done chases, if not the best, with beautifully worked camera shots to not only show off the cars but also give a sense of the speed and power that is the new Batmobile.
The fight choreography is stellar throughout the whole movie with the darker tone making it so that Batman can show off the more violent and heavy-hitting side of himself.
The story follows Batman as he chases after a sadistic serial killer who leaves behind cryptic clues. Batman must use his detective skills to solve these riddles and discover the true plans behind the antagonist. The story of Batman finally gets a chance to show off his detective side which is beautifully crafted and done really well throughout the movie. Having a couple of unexpected twists kept the viewer on the edge of their seats. The only “bad” thing I have to say about the story is that it is pretty slow with a long runtime of two hours and 56 minutes.
This new dark edgy tone is perfect for Batman and easily became my new favorite Batman movie. Even with some story and length issues, it is easily the best Batman movie, and I could not recommend it enough to go and see it for yourself. I, personally, rate it 9.5/10.
