The Winter Ball: Fossil Ridge High Schools most exciting dance yet

The Winter Ball: Fossil Ridge High School’s most exciting dance yet

Fossil Ridge High School is presenting this year’s Winter Ball on January 27th from 7-9 P.M, with a beautiful theme of northern lights. This dance is following last year’s Sadie Hawkins, but will instead be run by Future Business Leaders of America ( FBLA). This student-led organization allows for a little creativity in this year’s dance.

Kiela Mattoch, a senior at Fossil, is a part of FBLA and came up with the northern lights theme. Her goal going into organizing the Winter Ball was to cater towards students and take their feedback from Sadies to create a better dance this year. Mattoch wants to ensure students get that typical “high school musical vibe” and wants students to feel as if they are surrounded by the northern lights.

“Lighting must be a go, music must be a go,” Mattoch describes those two things as most important to her. While Mattoch is organizing the dance, she is also working on the DJ set with Jordan Vandermeulen, a business teacher at Fossil known as Mr. Van.

Traditionally Fossil would hire a professional DJ for a school dance, however for this dance Fossil is trying to save money and stay within their budget. Generously, Mr. Van agreed to step into this role of playing at the Winter Ball.

“You know when you agree to something that you think will never happen and then it happens,” Mr. Van jokes. Luckily enough, Mr. Van is not as inexperienced as some might believe. Van explains that he “DJ’d his way through college” and that in preparation for this weekend he will be ”studying up on the present music trends”.

This dance will also allow for personal music recommendations and song requests, allowing for student involvement and choice. This week there will be QR codes hung up in the halls and available to all students to put in their specific song request.

While dancing at the Winter Ball, everyone is simultaneously donating and supporting March of Dimes, a wonderful organization partnered with FBLA. Proceeds from this weekend will go towards the organization helping premature babies and their mothers. Not only will Fossil students live it up on the dancefloor at this year’s Winter Ball, they will also be giving back to their community.
