Welcome back SaberCats! I hope you all had a wonderful winter break. I don’t know about you, but I very much needed that time off!
As you may know, I love holidays! One of my favorite holidays is coming up: Valentine’s Day. The holiday is up for interpretation. Etched In Stone staff members chimed in with their thoughts on Valentine’s Day for my Editor’s Note.
“It’s about showing the people that you care about how much you care about them.”
Senior Vickie Bonnema, Editor-in-Chief
“Valentine’s Day is a good idea, but I think we should do things like that for people on a daily basis instead of waiting until February 14th every year.”
Sophomore Kierra Vaughan, staff reporter
“I think Valentine’s Day is celebrating the love you have for everyone, not just romantically. But I think couple wise it should just be a day to acknowledge the love that you do have for one another and recognize what should be going on every other day.”
Junior Bailey Gannett, staff reporter
“[Valentine’s Day is] a day to publicly express your love to someone.”
Junior Tomas Muelling, web manager
“Valentine’s Day was created for a reason that has been forgotten. Everyone has such high expectations about what February 14th is supposed to be like.”
Senior Paige Closson, photography editor
“I’ve never been a huge Valentine’s Day person. I’m not into cheesy lovey dovey stuff, and to be honest a whole day dedicated to it makes me so annoyed. There’s nothing wrong with taking someone out on a nice date on Valentine’s Day, but I feel like if someone wants to take you out then they can just take you out any other day. Why is there a specific day? I don’t see why you have to show a bigger love for someone than you already do; you should always show how much you love them, not just every February 14th.”
Sophomore Kaitlynn Schmurr, staff reporter
“I think Valentine’s Day is a day to be with the ones you love and care about.”
Junior Maddie Koppenhofer, social media and recruitment manager
“Valentine’s Day has turned into a day about romance and couples. In reality, it should be a day that you celebrate your friends and family and just appreciate the people you have around you.”
Senior Chandler Gould, copy editor
As for me, I think Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for love to flourish. It may be the beginning of a relationship, or 20 years into being together. Either way, it reminds us to remember and recognize why we fell in love. Hopefully, the effects of the day carry on much later into the year.
My boyfriend, Eddie Kendall, and I have been dating close to three years and will be celebrating our third Valentine’s Day together. For us, we don’t need a day to go out and do something special, but it is a nice excuse!
Whether you’re spending Feb. 14 alone or with someone special, I wish you a happy Valentine’s Day and that somewhere and that love finds you in some way.
Sincerely,
Topanga McBride
