Volcano in Indonesia forces thousands to evacuate

On Feb. 14 Mount Kelud erupted in Indonesia,  forcing tens of thousands people to flee their homes. As of Feb 17, the death toll is at four people. The government has raised the eruption alert to its highest level. All residents within a 6.2 mile radius of the volcano in eastern Java have been evacuated. Seven airports were also closed due to the volcanic ash.

Congo military reported killing more than 200 Uganda-based rebels

A spokesman from the Congo’s military reported that the country’s military has killed more than 200 rebels during an offensive against a Uganda-based group. The death toll is reported to be 230 men from the Allied Democratic Forces rebel group, also known as the ADF, and 22 members of the Congolese military.

Egyptian police and supporters of ousted president Mohammed Morsi clash

Egyptian security and riot police clashed with supporters of the ousted Islamist president Mohammed Morsi during weekly demonstrations. A 38-year-old man was shot and killed in Damietta during fights between Egyptian police and Morsi supporters. A 12-year-old boy was also killed when security forces fired tear gas and pellets up onto a balcony where he was standing. The rallies were in response to calls by the Muslim Brotherhood to disband pro-Morsi protests.

Man-eating tiger remains on the prowl in India

For over seven weeks a man-eating tiger has been on the prowl outside of various villages in India and has killed at least nine people. It is estimated that the tiger has traveled more than 120 miles in total. Hunters have been brought in to try to tranquilize or kill the tiger, but none of them are able to find it.
