From pet dragons to mutant turtles, this summer is full of bountiful movies that’ll be great to see either in the theaters or at the drive-in!
The Fault in our Stars adaptation from New York Times Bestseller John Green is hitting theaters June 6. Following the story of two teens with cancer that have fallen in love, Hazel (Shailene Woodley) and Gus (Ansel Elgort) share a similar humor, wit and inevitable fate. A word to the wise: read the book first unless you want to let your peers hear your heart crack in half during the film. A heartwarming and heartbreaking story, make sure you bring plenty of Kleenex and a shoulder to cry on; you’ll not only be leaving the theatres in tears but also in awe of such an intense story.
Coming out June 13, I doubt anyone isn’t excited for the sequel to How to Train Your Dragon with young adult Hiccup preparing to take over the chief role in Berk. Now that Vikings have befriended dragons life is going pretty well. Not only has Hiccup grown into a handsome young man, but he has reconnected with his lost mother. But things can’t be all perfect in a world filled with Vikings and dragons and Hiccup must face a new threat. I, for one, will be attending the premiere of this movie. Returning voices Jay Baruchel (Hiccup) and Gerard Butler (Stoick the Vast) with new voice Cate Blanchett as Valka, Hiccup’s mother.
On the same day another sequel concerning two immature police officers will premiere. 22 Jump Street, with returning actors Channing Tatum (Jenko) and Jonah Hill (Schmidt) are on another undercover assignment, now heading to college from their high school stint. If you’re into ridiculous comedies and relatively no storyline, this will probably be a good movie to see. Admittedly I might go just to have a couple brain-dead hours of easy laughs, especially when heading off to college in the fall it might be fun to see (along with Neighbors which is out now!).
On June 27 yet another sequel, Transformers 4: Age of Extinction, will come out with a new cast in attempts to revamp the already lost movie. This time they’re battling some prehistoric dinosaur alien robots. That, coupled with Mark Wahlberg and Nicola Peltz will bring some pretty intense sci-fi action. I would recommend going to it if you want to see some meticulous CGI (computer-generated imagery) and robot dinosaurs; otherwise I don’t think the storyline would be worth it.
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, another sequel to the reboot of the original movie from 1968 will hit theaters July 11 continuing the first reboot Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) where an ape, Caesar (Andy Serkis) was administered a brain enhancing drug and began an uprising. Now at war, humans are attempting to revolt against the ape’s forces. If you’re into some complicated sci-fi definitely check this movie out; I myself probably won’t attend, but may wait until I could rent it.
Aimed to invoke laughs and provide a fun, action-filled adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy is set to hit August 1. Continuing the Marvel universe, this flick is set in outer space (hence galaxy) following American pilot Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and a set of misfit outlaw aliens attempting to avoid villain Ronan and set the galaxy back in order (at least in their eyes). I’m so ridiculously excited for this one, it’s pathetic. Not only will I be attending the premiere, but most likely I’ll be dressing up in superhero gear too. The light-weight feel to this movie and intricacy to the Marvel franchise is sure to surprise and excite!
After numerous adaptations in TV shows, movies and merchandise, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have finally hit the big screen with a promising screenplay. If you don’t know much about the TMNT, don’t worry because I have no clue either but I’m still planning on seeing this flick. The CGI and story looks pretty decent and it’s understandable why filmmakers have waited so long to make sure they have some realistic mutant turtles. Opening August 8 this team is aimed to restore peace in a corrupt New York City due to villain Shredder and his Foot Clan’s deeds.
The adventure-flick known as Lucy, coming out the same day as TMNT, is centered around a woman, Lucy (Scarlett Johansson), who was kidnapped at a club and had something implanted inside of her. Now don’t get the wrong idea; the package ends up increasing her access to her brain and sends the heroine on a vengeful venture. Originally I wasn’t too sure if I was interested in this movie but now I may just head over to the theaters, or if anything wait until I can rent it.
The new adaptation from the bestseller and commonly taught novel, The Giver is being put into movie form with actors Jeff Bridges and Brenton Thwaites. Coming out August 15, this story follows a futuristic world where humans strive for perfection and communities are repressed so peace may be retained. But history must be remembered and memories are passed from one Giver to the other so history may not be repeated. But this way of life isn’t always perfect and Jonas (Brenton Thwaites) is determined to change his fate. I most likely will go to this movie and with an all-star cast I have high hopes for the adaptation.
