Spring is here, the first day of the season happening on March 20, and it was actually a really pretty first few days of spring–and then Colorado happened (i.e. it got cloudy and tried to snow). Spring is associated with the beginning of the season, and it means we are that much closer to summer. So what is spring all about?
Spring was first called Lent because of the Christian season leading up to Easter. In the 14 century it was called “springing time.” This was in reference to plants springing from the ground. In the 15 century it was shortened to “spring-time.” By the 16 century it was called “spring” which was the final shortening of the term.
Everyone has heard the phrase “spring fever” it is a restless feeling commonly associated with the beginning of spring. The spring equinox is considered the turning point from the winter blues to spring fever. According to the New York Times this is the time when there are higher energy levels, decreased sleep, reduced eating and signs of depression go away. Mostly through an adjustment for the amount of light there is. This light limits the amount of melatonin in the brain. The more light there is, the better a person will feel.
Spring is supposed to be fun and happy and just well spring. Here in Colorado, though, spring is kind of a weird thing; the weather likes to be bipolar. One day it could be snowing, the next it could be sunny with a high of 75.
As difficult as Colorado can make it sometimes, get outside and have fun. It is spring, be active, soak up the sun and most importantly, smile.
