We’ve hit full stride in spring sports at Fossil Ridge High School. This season is busy, with baseball, lacrosse, track, girls’ soccer, boys’ swimming and diving, girls golf and girls tennis. Each program is competing at a high level which should make for an exciting post season push for some teams at Fossil.
The girls are doing well on the soccer field with a 6-5 record nearing the middle of their season. With big wins over teams like Fort Collins, Poudre and Horizon, the girls are looking to make a late postseason push. The team is led by seniors Kaylee Brown, Ella Campana, and Kellee Willer. But don’t let these seniors fool you into believing that there is no underclassman help. With freshmen Sophie Smith and Jaelin Howell that play on the US national team, there are successful seasons to come for the FRHS girls’ soccer program.
The boys’ baseball program has had a rollercoaster of a year. They have a record of 4-7, the Sabercats started out the year with three out of state losses in Arizona. The boys have eight games left and the playoffs are still in the picture. “The first half of our schedule was challenging, but we’re in the homestretch of the year now, and were starting to get hot, so we should finish the year good,” said senior Mitchell Salmela, a third baseman and pitcher.
The boys’ swimming and diving team is nearing mid season and has had a great year thus far. The boys are looking to make a state run just as the girls did, with a handful of first place finishes, one being the Smoky Hill Invitational where the team finished first place out of 12 teams. “We’re in a good spot right now, and have a good chance at state,” said Junior Clay Kosonocky. It looks like the boys’ swimming and diving team will finish this year strong.
Another team looking to finish the season off with a bang is the Unified Lacrosse team. Their record is 2-6 with some losses to big name teams like Poway and Cherry Creek. Their two wins are both against the Boulder Panthers, a worthy opponent. Winning the first game 9-8, and then winning the second 15-5.
The girls golf team is having a successful season. The lady golfers finished an amazing 2nd out of 22 teams in the Birleffi Invitational and proved to the state of Colorado who a top contender in girls golf is.
The Sabercat female tennis players have done exceedingly well so far. The team has an overall record of 7-2 and two 3rd place finishes. They are scheduled to compete in the Cheyenne Mountain invitational Friday and Saturday of this week.
Last but not least, the track team has hit the midway point in their season and have performed well thus far. They have two first place finishes and with talent worthy of state, which is coming up in three weeks. The team participated in the “Broomfield Shootout” on March 27th and finished 6th place out of 39 teams from around the state. The team also attended the KU relays this past weekend, held at the Jayhawks stadium, and athletes had mixed performances. But the end of their season is looking promising. Be sure to support your Sabercats competing in the upcoming state competition.
Overall the Spring Sport Sabercats have had an exceptional regular season, but it’s not over as some make a push for the post season and maybe even state runs.
