Following a tough loss against Lakewood, the girls’ Varsity basketball team took the court against Loveland on Wednesday, February 3. With an intense but quiet atmosphere, the Sabercats competed against cross town rivals. It was a big conference game for both schools and the 49-41 win for the Sabercats put them in control of their own destiny in regards to conference. During the game, there was about fifteen student fans which is huge for the girls, and with them cheering the team on, it helped give them the energy they needed to pull through the game.

It was an ugly win for the Sabercats, the team played with a low level of intensity and effort. They were out-hustled by Loveland but battled through their sloppy performance to grind out a win. Freshman, Ashley Steffeck comments, “having so many days off really affected the way we played. Without having any practice or films before playing Loveland, all of us were not ready or prepared to play.” C-team coach, Bruce Holbert couldn’t agree anymore with Steffeck, “You could tell the girls had not played since last Saturday, they played very disconnected and it wasn’t very pleasing to watch.” Overall as a team, they were successful with their free throws but on the flip side they struggled executing outside shots and boxing out for rebounds.

Junior, Britton Mishak was the ‘Player of the Game’, scoring 25 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Sami Steffeck comments, “She did a good job of not fouling when people would drive and she was a huge help on the offensive side.” Mishak has been a key player for Varsity this year and continues to help lead the team to wins.

This win has helped the Sabercats get a glimpse at finishing third in conference. If the team were to beat Rocky, Poudre, and Fairview they will finish third in conference and get a good seed for the end of season tournament.
