On Monday, April 15, students from Fossil Ridge High School’s bands went to Colorado State University to partake in a statewide band competition. Fossil’s top two bands, Wind Symphony and Select Symphonic Band, were invited to participate at state.

Both bands, made up primarily of sophomores, juniors, and seniors, were accepted to go to state after their amazing performances at the regional competition. After playing, their performances were judged by some of the top musicians in the state and a musical clinician spoke with each band at regionals about areas for improvement. Fossil’s Wind Symphony and Select Symphonic Bands received scores of one, meaning they ranked superior in every category.

On Monday, the two ensembles traveled to CSU to compete against other high schools. Fossil was one of three schools in Colorado that were selected to bring two bands to the competition rather than just one. “It’s really rare to have two groups go. A lot of bands compete at regionals but much fewer get invited to state and we had two bands get invited, so it was a huge accomplishment,” Says Meghan Muñoz, Fossil’s Director of Bands.

Despite not having much time to prepare due to Spring Break, and the week prior to state being filled with testing and altered schedules, both Fossil bands performed incredibly well. Select Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony got superior with distinctions, the highest scores they can receive.“Both bands played fantastically and it was amazing for them to get the highest scores possible. It just shows how well our bands can perform,” States Muñoz.
