Field Hockey: Sabercats drop opener but stay optimistic

Dylan Heinrich, Sports Writer

On August 23, 2021, the Fossil Ridge Field Hockey team lost their opening matchup against Mountain Vista 6-0. Despite the loss, the Fossil Ridge defense was active with their sticks and forced several turnovers. The goaltending was another highlight, with the keeper having several great clears during this game.

Unfortunately, the Fossil offense struggled and was only able to get a few shots on net and no sustained pressure. The Sabercats hurt themselves by taking multiple penalties which led to several Mountain Vista goals.

The Fossil players aren’t discouraged, as they look to continue to improve together as a team. Adelaine Kick and Catherine Clark look to use this game as a learning experience.

“I think to see a lot of improvement and to grow as a team and wok on our strategies. A lot of the Denver teams are going to be hard to play against, but I think we’re gonna do the best we can,” said Kick.

Win or loss, these players are just happy to be back out and playing in a regular season, after the shortened 2020 season.

“It was weird without the masks…good weird.,” Clark said.

The team ended up losing, but they definitely had some positives to build one.

“I think we did do a lot of talking…supporting each other even when people made mistakes, then I think we’re gonna take that into the rest of the season,” said Kick.

The talking and support is very emblematic of this team as a whole. Regardless of the result, this team will always continue to fight for one another.

“Everyone is super nice and supportive,” said Clark

“I think we’re a really close tight knit team…we’re all doing really well together…It’s just like a second family,” Kick said.
