Sabercat softball leads off with a 13-0 victory
August 17, 2022
A new school year has begun, meaning softball season is in full swing. The Fossil Ridge High School softball team wasted no time, defeating Smoky Hill High School on the first day of the new school year. The Sabercats’ dominance started on defense, as sophomore pitcher Brooklyn Cardenas threw four scoreless innings. Cardenas completed the day allowing only two hits, two walks, and striking out eight batters. Fossil added plenty of firepower on the offensive end. All nine starters got on base during the game. However, the highlight of the day came from senior catcher Kodi Alvord, who hit a massive three run homer to blow the game wide open.
“[The home run] felt good, barely hit any all summer…hit it in the same spot as I did the last time we played Smoky Hill,” Alvord said.
As Alvord enters her final year on the team, she now looks to take on a larger role both on and off the field. Despite several new faces on the roster, the team’s connection has already been established and they already look in sync.
“I’ve been in that role for most of my career anyways, and then learning from past years…everyone gets along and they’ll follow you anywhere,” Alvord said.
Expectations for this year’s team have been lower than in years past. This doubt stems from the departure of several experienced players and needing to replace four starters from last year’s squad. However this team is driven to prove that they are an elite level team and capable of hanging with the best.
“It’s definitely a lot more than everyone expected it would be…we’re excited for more games and just playing as hard as they can…everyone’s here to win,” Alvord said.
The Sabercats will get their chance to prove themselves in their home matchup against third ranked Columbine High School on Thursday, August 18.
