On Thursday Oct. 3, the Fossil Ridge girls’ softball team won its ninth game in a row when it beat Poudre 8-7. The team is off to an 18-1 start that includes wins against rivals Poudre, Rocky and Fort Collins. Not only is the team tied for first with a 10-1 record in the Front Range class 5A, they are also ranked fifth in the state.
FRHS also will be hosting the Region 4 tournament on Oct. 12. FRHS is one out of seven teams in its conference to make the regional tournament. None of the teams however, have had a better statistical season then FRHS. The seven teams from FRHS’ conference have a combined seven players with a batting average of .500, while FRHS has seven players on their own team with a batting average of .500. Not only are player hitting regularly, they are hitting with power. FRHS has 27 homeruns, more than any other team in FRHS history. The rest of the league has a combined 25 homeruns.
Though, statistically they are having a record year, the team is finding success in other ways.
“A lot of our success comes from our ability to thrive under pressure. We trust each other to make the right play because we have such great chemistry,” senior Courtney Medina said. The team “Is a great group of athletes. We love what we for and we not only have a passion for winning, but a passion for softball itself.”
The team plays the 9-10 Highlands Ranch team on Oct. 12 at Regionals. If the team is successful it will qualify for the state tournament and have a chance at a 5A championship. “At the end of the day our main goal is to go to state and I believe we have the athletes to do it,” Medina said.
