Car bomb detonates in Syria after aid workers kidnapped

At least 39 people have been killed and dozens were injured after a car bomb detonated in northern Syria on Oct. 14 in Darkoush, a rebel-held town in the Idlib providence. Many of those injured suffered critical injuries. No person or group has claimed responsibility for the bombing thus far. Hours before the bombing took place the International Committee of the Red Cross reported six of their staff had been abducted along with an employee with the Syrian Arab Red Crescent.  Three aid workers from the Red Cross and the one employee from the Syrian Arab Red Crescent have all been released, however nothing has been heard about the other Red Cross employees.

Libyan terrorist confirmed to be in the United States

An al Qaeda suspect, Abu Anas al-Libi, who was help aboard a United States warship, has been confirmed to be in the U.S. after being captured in Libya. Al-libi is expected to stand trial on the accusation of taking photos of the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi in preparation for an attack as well as being a senior aid to Osama bin LadenAl-libi was transferred to Stewart Air Force base in New York escorted by FBI agents. He was initially questioned on the U.S. Navy ship San Antonio but he suffers from a chronic health condition and began refusing food and water, and was brought into New York. Al-Libi was on the FBI’s most wanted terrorist list.

Over 1,000 detained after riots in Moscow, Russia

On Oct. 14 police arrested more than 1,200 people during a raid in a vegetable warehouse in the Biryulovo district in Russia after the stabbing and death of an ethnic Russian man who was killed by a North Caucasus native. The man killed was a 25 year-old Yegor Shcherbakov, who was killed in a dispute over his girlfriend over another man. Rioters claimed they were protesting the impunity for the man’s killer. Police are still trying to find Shcherbakov’s killer and bring them to justice. The vegetable warehouse was where the rioters believed the killer worked. Some of the detainees are being investigated for criminal connections. Police also found a car full of money and unlicensed weapons on the premises. Tension between Russians and North Caucasus natives have been increasing for nearly two decades.

Over 100 killed in stampede in India

115 people were killed when a bridge collapsed In New Delhi, India during a festival at a nearby Hindu temple. Over 100 more people are injured, and many bodies are still missing. Many were crushed to death, while others tried to jump off the bridge to escape and drowned. In 2006 there was a stampede on the same bridge and 50 people died, which prompted a larger, two lane bridge to be installed, but it still wasn’t enough to support the large crowd.

U.S. suspends Egyptian military aid

The United States government will suspend $1.3 billion that was going to aid Egypt’s military. The delivery of tanks and aircrafts will stop, but counter terrorism and border security won’t be affected, and neither will health and education assistance. This decision is in the wake of the July coup against Mohamed Morsy. Some fear that suspending this aid will force Egypt to seek help from rivals of the U.S.
