Sunflowers and Sundresses: Homemade Halloween costumes

Halloween is creeping up on us again. It’s time to get gruesome and ghouly or creative and classy. No matter what you choose, Halloween is meant to be fun, so don’t stress about how you look! Just worry about what you are going to do with all of that candy at the end of the night.

Ladies if you are looking to be traditional go for a roaring ’20s flapper. Find a flapper dress in the color of your choice and some low kitten heels or flats to match. To make the whole outfit work, pair it with a fabulous feather boa, long pearls and a headband with a feather or two. If you have short hair, wave it and you are good to go. If you are like me and have super long hair create a faux bob by gathering your hair in a very loose pony tail at the base of your neck and flipping the ponytail under your hair to hide it and pin it. This trick works best of you have short layers.

The best quirky costume is to be a minion from Despicable Me. Everyone loves the cuddly yellow guys, so who better to be? The first step is to find denim overalls or a denim overall dress at a thrift shop, then print off a stencil of Gru’s symbol and cut it out and paint the symbol on with back fabric paint or just color it in with a black sharpie. The next step is super easy; find a yellow long sleeved shirt, yellow leggings and a bright yellow beanie. Take black pipe cleaners for your minion hair and pull them through your beanie in any minion hairstyle you would like. The hardest portion of this costume is the goggles. In most Halloween stores they will have these minion goggles sold separately, but you can make them yourself. Cute the ends off of a PVC pipe and spray paint them silver, wait for them to dry and glue the two together and then glue small bolts around the frames. Lastly, super glue or stitch an elastic band on the goggles so you can wear them on your head. To pull the costume together, add black gloves and some black boots or tennis shoes.

Girls who love to be the comedian in the room, this one is for you. Time to be a human piñata, yes, I am serious. Find a tan dress in any shape you would like and buy multi-colored streamers. Cut the streamers into short sections and glue the pieces in a pattern like a piñata with a glue-gun. Add long streamers of different colors to create and a tail, and make a head band with colored ears and the outfit is complete.

For the girly-girl it is easy to stay classic, try Little Red Riding hood. This one is as simple as it gets, start by finding a simple white or red dress. Obviously, the next step is to create your cape. If you are sewing-challenged, like me, you can find fabric glue at every craft store. Buy the fabric of your choice at the length of your choice. Fold over an inch at the top of your cape and glue it down at the edge so it is still a clear tunnel, next pull through string in the matching color so you can tie it around your neck. For the hood, start with a rectangle of the same fabric. Fold the rectangle in half and apply glue to one side. Next attach the end of the hood to the top of your cape. For the finishing touches, add some black shoes and don’t forget your basket.

This costume is for a pair, it is the classic Thing 1 & 2. Start with a plain red tank top and paint white circles with Thing 1 and Thing 2 written on them with black. Next add fun red tutu, and please don’t forget to wear red shorts underneath. Find a blue wig or buy some blue hairspray to imitate the iconic blue hair of the Dr. Seuss characters. Lastly add some red shoes like flip flops or converse and some red leg warmers. The two of you will be able to cause all the trouble you need in these costumes.

This one is for the girl who will have energy all night long, the Energizer Bunny, excuse the pun.  First start off with an all pink outfit and some blue shoes. Next find some adorable bunny ears and something that could serve as drum sticks. Don’t forget your bunny nose and whiskers for the makeup. Lastly create your drum with a hat box or a round container. Paint the red crisscrosses and the blue edges, and then add the Energizer logo and attach something to hold it around your neck.

If you are look for a group costume and are looking to recycle your super hero gear from Homecoming, be the Avengers. This one is pretty simple, too. Start off with a tutu (are you seeing a pattern?)  in the corresponding colors for your super hero. For example, if you are Iron Man buy a red or yellow tutu and if you are the Hulk buy a purple tutu. Next buy a t-shirt of your hero, like an Iron Man shirt if you are Iron Man. Lastly, you need the unique accessories. If you are Hawkeye, you will need a bow and some arrows. If you are Iron Man, look for some gloves or a glowing necklace. Thor, you will need a hammer, of course. Hulk, don’t forget your big green fists. Captain America, a shield is a requirement. Black Widow, look for a black water gun or some black gloves and it is a must to have some red hair.

Have a fun and fabulous Halloween and rock your amazing costumes. Remember to splurge a little on your candy, you are only young once. Stay beautiful, sunflowers.
