A pop of culture: Let’s talk entertainment

The world of entertainment including movies, television and music has been booming. It seems that singles and albums are being released every second and the best shows on TV are either premiering seasons or nearing heart stopping finales. Let’s check in with everything, shall we?

People always say, “save the best for last,” but this time I’m saying it’sbest for first. On Sept. 27, 2013 Lorde’s debut album “Pure Heroin” was released, and I’m not kidding you, this album is something else. Her sound is so unique that it brings something new to the music industry. Most of the songs open with odd yet enthralling intros and 16-year-old Ella Yelich-O’Connor’s (Stage name Lorde) vocals are on point. The New Zealand native incorporated prerecorded harmonies with herself – showing her vast range of vocal talent- and her voice is lower which gives her the diversity she deserves, similar to American singer, Lana Del Rey. The sound is so contemporary that it’s hard to place a specific adjective on it; all I can say is that it’s fresh and here to stay. Not only can you totally jam to every song on the album; but also study, dance, sleep, really anything. Lorde’s first single off the album “Royals” was released at the end of the summer and is presently blowing up the charts and radio stations. The song’s got base, edgy vocals and a catchy beat, which helped it pass Miley Cyrus’s “Wrecking Ball” on Billboard’s Hot 100. Artists with such new sounding products are the newfound hope for the music industry, who can at least temporarily bury the carbon copy pieces of music we hear so often, beneath the surface of the radio waves. The only downside to “Pure Heroin” is that the songs all sound very similar. But to be completely honest, all of it is so obscure to normal music it’s nice to listen to the similar songs. Hats off to you Lorde, your talent reigns down through your album, making it something modern that we’ve never heard before.

Moving on, the newest season of FX’s smash hit TV show, “American Horror Story” premiered its first episode Oct. 9. As an avid viewer myself, let me tell you, this premier was absolutely incredible. The cool thing about this show is that every season is a different story with different characters, but has the same actors. Every season fans of the show rev up in excitement to see what scary plot will unfold within the new season. This season’s title is Coven and it’s based off a group of teenage witches attending a witches-only boarding school in Louisiana. Each girl has a different power, but there are only four of them. This episode reveals that witches are a dying breed, and these four are the only hope for witchcraft. Story aside I must warn anyone interested in watching; some scenes are very disturbing and a lot of gore is included and heavy language. Nothing a small child could handle, but a teenager with an aspect of how real Hollywood can make something seem should be fine. I’m not a huge horror lover, but this is probably one of my favorite shows. As the season continues, so will updates so stay tuned.

Speaking of my favorite shows, MTV announced that Teen Wolf has been picked up for its fourth season. I cannot begin to tell you how exciting this is. Teen wolf is SUCH an amazing show. It’s full of drama, suspense, mystery and not to mention hot shirtless men. Who doesn’t love hot shirtless men? Now, let’s not get ahead of ourselves; besides all the attractiveness that pours out of the TV screen each episode, the story line is so intriguing. (But I’m not kidding, this is the most attractive cast ever… don’t argue.) I’m hoping we’ll FINALLY be getting a Dylan Obrien shirtless scene, because we’ve seen everyone else’s abs so it’s an obvious requirement for season four… Exact dates and everything are not to be announced at the moment, but I’m hoping it’s sooner rather than later.

Entertainment is picking up the pace lately, which maybe isn’t the best thing for my homework, but it’s definitely a plus for my social life because it gives an awkward girl like me more to talk about. We’re just going to say, nights at my house are going to be filled with either evil witches, chiseled werewolves or Lorde’s album blaring through my speakers.
